Lenovo produces an incredibly huge variety of laptops, ultrabooks and convertible ultrabooks. Their total number, taking into account all the modifications, cannot be counted. There are more than twenty pieces of gaming models in the current assortment of the company, in particular, the new Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H has recently joined their ranks. It has powerful AMD Ryzen 4000-series processors, high-performance NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics cards, a high-quality IPS display with a refresh rate of 144 Hz, and an efficient cooling system. But the most important thing is that all this is housed in a compact case with a 15-inch display. In addition, the new laptop uses other interesting solutions, which we will also tell you about in today’s article.

⇡#Packaging

The Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H comes in a large cardboard box with a plastic handle. The designers did not waste time on trifles and placed the name of the gaming series of Lenovo laptops on the front side of the box throughout its area.

At the end of the box there is a sticker with a lot of useful information, including the hardware configuration, serial number, laptop case color and even its battery parameters.

Inside the cardboard box, the laptop is packed very securely. It is inserted into a compound shell made of polyethylene foam and additionally dressed in a soft synthetic bag.

In addition to the laptop, the box contains a power adapter with a cable, a power cable, a brief manual and a warranty card.

The Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H will be priced by configuration, starting at around $1,300. The configuration provided to us for testing (code 82B1000RRU) with an AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card, 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD and a 144 Hz display cost at the time of writing the material from $ 1,800 – and this is certainly interesting offer. However, the price floats somewhat depending on the store, region and, of course, the exchange rate.

We add that the laptop manufactured in China is provided with a two-year warranty with the possibility of extending it to three years.

⇡#Design and ergonomics body

The case of the new Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H is made in the color “ghost black” (Phantom Black) of plastic with the addition of talc, which is needed so that fingerprints are not so noticeable and the laptop can keep a pleasant appearance for as long as possible. At the same time, the design of the Lenovo Legion 15ARH05H case can be called calm and restrained – no sharp transitions or broken lines.

The display’s hinged hinge and “LEGION” logo lettering on the corner of the lid are coated with light-refracting material and change color at different angles.

A trinity of stickers in the lower left corner of the working surface speaks of the processor and video cards installed in the laptop, and on top there is an inscription about the participation of Harman specialists in setting up the laptop’s sound system.

There are three information stickers on the bottom of the case.

The Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H is a gaming laptop, and by the standards of gaming devices, it can confidently be called compact, since it measures only 363 × 260 × 23.6 mm (maximum thickness 26.1 mm). With 2460 grams declared in the specifications, the laptop weighs 2342 grams – this is quite a typical value for a gaming laptop.

To open the lid with the display, you do not have to hold the base of the laptop, while it can be fixed in any position, including opening to a maximum of 180 degrees.

The stability of the laptop case is given by long rubber feet 1.5-2 mm high.

There are no connectors and indicators on the front end of the laptop case.

But behind and on the sides of the case, next to the ventilation grilles, there are numerous interface ports.

These include an RJ-45 network port for a cable gigabit network, four USB 3.2 Gen1 ports at once (two on the back and one on the sides), one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C, HDMI video output, a headphone or microphone combo jack, a loop for a lock Kensington, power socket and indicators.

To make it convenient to connect cables at the back of the laptop, there are signatures above the connectors.

However, they become visible only when the laptop display is closed or at least covered. Note that the seventeen-inch version of Lenovo Legion 5 also has a card reader.

The laptop power button is located in the center, above the keyboard, right below the name of the series.

We add that we have no comments about the build quality of the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H case: no backlashes or creaks were found.

⇡#Input Devices

Before describing the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H keyboard, we need to say a few words about the work surface below it. The fact is that this is not ordinary plastic, but a tactilely pleasant polymer material, it feels somewhere between plastic and silicone. Touching it or holding hands on it is extremely comfortable. Previously, I personally have not seen such material in laptops – and this is a real find that takes the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H to a new level.

As for the keyboard, which even has its own name – Legion TrueStrike, then it did not let us down here either. Membrane-type keys with a numeric keypad and an oleophobic coating are pressed silently, have a stroke of about 1.5 mm, and the Second Transition mechanism simultaneously provides both a clear response to pressing and a soft stroke. Exactly the same mechanism, by the way, is used in ThinkPad business series notebooks, where the convenience of typing on the keyboard is very important.

The dimensions of the main keys are 15.5 × 15.5 mm, and the functional keys are 13.5 × 10.0 mm. The block of arrows has been shifted down a notch, which made it possible to place larger Shift and Enter above them.

Typing is comfortable (with a discount for a 15-inch laptop format), false positives are at a minimum, and that is, they are only until you get used to the keyboard. On the top right, there is a sticker reminding you of the possibility of switching between laptop operating modes using the Fn + Q keyboard shortcut.

The keys of our version of the laptop have white two-level backlighting, and optionally, the laptop can be equipped with a keyboard with four-zone RGB backlighting, which segments the keys in different colors.

The two-button touchpad of the laptop is made in dimensions of 105 × 70 mm.

The surface is smooth, cursor positioning is perfect. There are no squeaks or parasitic clicks at all.

An HD camera with shutter and two microphones are built into a small extension of the upper display bezel.

⇡#Display

The Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H is equipped with a 15.6-inch FHD (1920 × 1080 pixels) IPS panel with anti-glare coating, a claimed brightness of 300 nits, a contrast ratio of 1000:1 and 100% coverage of the sRGB color space. The response time of the matrix is less than 7 ms (with activated Overdrive mode – less than 5 ms). But the frequency can be different: 60 or 144 Hz. We are testing just the second, more gaming version, so to speak. We add here that Lenovo has a Legion 5P model in its assortment, which uses exactly the same matrices, but immediately with factory calibration and the ability to download a color profile from the laptop serial number directly from the Lenovo website. An interesting feature, we do not remember this from other manufacturers.

The matrix manufacturer was LG (model LGD0657).

We tested the ultrabook display with X-Rite i1 Display Pro and Argyll CMS software with DispcalGUI GUI. All measurements were taken prior to display calibration. Let’s look at the results.

The average value of DeltaE deviations (1.4) is well within the nominal tolerances of the test, and the maximum value (2.58) is within the recommended ones.

The color temperature is as close as possible to the reference value of 6500 K.

With the gamma curve, the situation is worse (by the way, this is practically not corrected by calibration), but in general there are no critical deviations.

The deviations of the color balance in the gray gradient do not exceed 5%.

After the calibration, the average level of DeltaE deviations was only 0.18 units, the maximum – 0.9 units. sRGB coverage was 106.4%, Adobe RGB 73.3%, and DCI P3 75.3%.

With the declared performance of 300 cd/m2, the actual maximum display brightness was 356 cd/m2, and the minimum was 2 cd/m2 . At the same time, in the adjustment range from 100 to 70%, the brightness literally “collapses” by 259 cd / m2, which is somewhat unusual and somewhat uncomfortable when adjusting.

The stock of brightness is more than enough for comfortable work behind the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H display outdoors on a sunny day.

When measuring backlight uniformity, non-critical problems were revealed almost along the entire top of the display and partly along its left edge.

The maximum deviation from the center point at a brightness of 200 cd/m2 was 17.05%. In general, the display is not ideal, but it is definitely above average, and in this price class of laptops it can take a leading position.

⇡#Internal device and accessories

Despite the compactness of the case, the developers of Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H managed to place in it a massive cooling system with heat pipes, radiators and fans. It occupies a good half of the area above the board and components. Approximately 30% of the internal volume of the laptop case is reserved for the battery. The component density is very high.

AIDA64 Extreme will show us a short report on the hardware configuration of the laptop.

Now let’s take a look at each component separately.

Little is known about the board, as always: the AMD Ryzen SoC chipset and BIOS dated October 9, 2020 version FSCN13WW – no newer version was found at the time of writing.

The Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H is available with two 7nm processors: the octa-core AMD Ryzen 7 4800H or the hexa-core AMD Ryzen 5 4600H. We have just the version with the latest processor in our tests – and this, in our opinion, is the best option, based on the combination of performance and power consumption (read – noise level and temperatures).

This 12-thread processor can run up to 4 GHz at a TDP of 45 watts and has an integrated graphics core.

The laptop has two SO-DIMM slots for DDR4 memory, where, depending on the configuration, 8 or 16 GB of RAM can be placed, covered with an aluminum heat spreader.

If you select 16 GB, then the memory will work in dual-channel mode. The maximum amount of memory reaches 32 GB, although there are confirmed cases of successful installation of 64 GB. But the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H doesn’t ship with those capacities, so if you need 32GB or more, you’ll have to go with the 8GB version and install a couple of larger modules yourself. By the way, the warranty on the laptop in this case is preserved.

The memory frequency is 3.2 GHz with timings 22-22-22-52 CR1 (we have Kingston LV32D4S2S8HD-8 modules).

RAM bandwidth and latency are shown in the following screenshot. We note right away that these are quite standard indicators for platforms with AMD Ryzen 4xxx processors.

In addition to the graphics core built into the central processor, the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H is equipped with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card with 6 GB of memory.

The base frequency of the graphics processor of this video card is 960 MHz, but in benchmarks and games we will see a completely different picture, which we will tell you about in the testing section. At the same time, the laptop provides the ability to overclock the GPU with just a couple of clicks, and it is bearing fruit. The video memory always operates at an effective frequency of 11 GHz (by “always” here we mean “from the mains”).

The Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H has two M.2 slots for an 80mm SSD. In the first, an SSD is immediately installed, covered with a heat spreader plate with a thermal pad.

The second one is empty for the time being, waiting for the owner of the laptop to play enough games and want to install new ones without deleting the old ones.

By the way, the amount of storage in Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H can vary from 256 GB to 1 TB, and we have a laptop with a 512 GB Samsung PM981a drive (MZVLB512HBJQ-000L2).

This is a very fast SSD model, but it only reveals its full potential when working from the power adapter and the mains. To verify this, we tested the drive both in this mode (results on the left) and with the laptop running on battery (results on the right).

As you can see, the difference is quite noticeable, but it should be noted that even when running on battery, the performance of the SSD will be enough for any tasks that the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H may face in a mobile state. The stress test of the drive did not reveal any problems with its temperatures: the maximum that we managed to see was 47 degrees Celsius.

SSD Stress Test in Performance Laptop Mode

The laptop has two network controllers. The cable network is provided by Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet, and the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 module with support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), MIMO 2 × 2 and the ability to operate at frequencies of 2.5 and 5.0 GHz (bandwidth 160 MHz).

The sound path of the laptop is based on the Realtek ALC257 audio codec, which outputs an audio signal to two stereo speakers with a power of 2 W each.

Sound has been tuned by Harman, Dolby Atmos for headphones is supported, and customized sound profiles can be selected through the Lenovo Vantage app.

The volume reserve of the laptop’s audio system is more than sufficient, the sound is clear and sonorous, but the low frequencies are still not enough.

⇡#Cooling system, efficiency and noise level

Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H is equipped with a proprietary Coldfront 2.0 cooling system. Cold air enters the laptop from the bottom through the vents, while heated air is expelled through the grilles on the back and sides.

Lenovo Legion 5/5P/5I Coldfront 2.0 Cooling System

In the cooling system, two circuits can be distinguished, having one common copper heat pipe and two individual ones. The left circuit cools the video card and its memory, and the right circuit cools the central processor with power piping.

Each fan has 67 flat blades made of high-strength liquid-crystal polymer and an integrated thermal module – a metal casing involved in the heat exchange process. As you can see, Lenovo engineers used all the possible volume of the internal space of the laptop to increase the usable heat distribution area.

The operating modes of the laptop and its cooling systems are configured in Lenovo Vantage, where performance, balanced and quiet options are available. In performance mode, it is possible to overclock the graphics processor of the video card by up to 200 MHz.

To evaluate the efficiency of laptop CPU cooling, we used the powerMAX utility (in AVX mode), and the monitoring parameters were read and displayed by HWiNFO64. Testing was conducted at a room temperature of approximately 24.5 degrees Celsius, running the operating system Windows 10 Home x64, with the latest available drivers and updates installed.

First, let’s look at temperatures and evaluate the noise level of the laptop when running on power adapter and mains in three Lenovo Vantage modes.

Performance Mode

 Balanced Mode

Balanced Mode

 Silent mode

Silent Mode

In maximum performance mode, the laptop keeps the processor frequency at around 3.85 GHz, but the core temperature is close to 100 degrees Celsius, while the noise level is excessively high. Alas, this is the price for the maximum frequency of the AMD Ryzen 5 4600H six-core processor. In balanced mode, the laptop took approximately 5-6 minutes to stabilize the temperature and frequency readings at 80 degrees Celsius and 3.45 GHz, respectively. The noise level of the laptop cooling system in this mode is noticeably lower, but you still can’t call it comfortable. And only in quiet mode does the laptop become comfortable with a high load on the central processor, but in this case its frequency is limited to 2.8 GHz at a temperature of 64 degrees Celsius.

Now let’s do the same test on the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H when running on battery power only (only balanced and quiet modes are available).

 Balanced mode

Balanced Mode

 Silent Mode

Silent Mode

In balanced mode, the processor frequency is 2.85 GHz, which is immediately 0.6 GHz lower than when the laptop is running on mains power. But temperatures are also lower with noise level: less than 62 degrees Celsius during load – and the volume of cooling is quite comfortable. In turn, in quiet mode, the CPU frequency is even lower – about 2.6-2.65 GHz at a temperature of only 55 degrees Celsius. In this case, the laptop cooling system is not audible at all. At the same time, you need to understand that this data is more informational than practical in nature, since gaming laptops are very rarely used offline (and certainly not for games).

We loaded the laptop’s discrete graphics card with the Fire Strike Extreme stability test from the 3DMark package.

The principle of operation of the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H with a gaming load turned out to be the same as with a load on the central processor. It gives maximum performance only in the noisy Performance mode.

 Performance Mode

Performance Mode

Balanced Mode

 Silent Mode

Silent Mode

Here, the GPU frequency is consistently above 1.7 GHz, which is a very good indicator for a discrete GeForce RTX 2060 in laptops, but let’s not forget that the noise level of the laptop is very high. In the balanced settings mode, the GPU frequency is reduced to 1.45-1.5 GHz, and its temperature is lower by 6-8 degrees Celsius. Still, relative comfort in terms of noise level comes only in Silent mode, when the GPU frequency drops to 1.4 GHz, but the cooling system is quieter than in the previous two modes, but the temperature of the GPU becomes a couple of degrees Celsius higher than in balanced mode.

Monitoring the video card in 3DMark tests clearly demonstrates how disconnecting the power adapter from a laptop turns it from a relatively powerful gaming machine into, so to speak, a “vegetable” computer.

Balanced Mode

 Silent mode

Silent Mode

And although the balanced mode still tries to maintain the frequency of the GPU, the frequency of the video memory still does not go beyond the level of the 2D mode, so the performance of the video card when running on battery drops by a factor of three, or even lower. In quiet mode, you can say that nothing happens to the video card at all, and the laptop works silently. Quite, by the way, predictable results.

At the end of the stress tests, we add that the laptop case in the work area does not overheat even at the highest load, and the air emitted through the ventilation grilles does not cause any discomfort.

Performance testing

We tested the performance of the CPU and RAM of the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H in two states of the laptop: on mains power in Performance mode (left) and on battery in Balanced mode (results on the right).

As you can see, the losses are quite noticeable, but it should be noted that thanks to the energy-efficient 7nm AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor, even without additional power, the laptop maintains a high level of performance in these tasks.

At the end of the processor benchmarks, we will present the results obtained above in the table – in comparison with the same results of the gaming laptop Honor Hunter V700 i7, equipped with a six-core / twelve-thread Intel Core i7-10750H processor and a similar video card.

The results in 3D benchmarks and games turned out to be more interesting. First of all, we evaluated the effect of Lenovo Vantage’s 100 MHz GPU overclock by testing the laptop in four of the most demanding 3DMark benchmarks.

Performance increased by 3-5%, which is almost impossible to notice in the gameplay, but the very fact that the GPU can be overclocked and its stable operation after that in the laptop can be called a very good addition.

We carried out all subsequent tests in games without overclocking the video card. Each game was set to maximum quality mode, all effects were enabled, and VSync was disabled.

There are no significant differences in the 3D performance of these laptops, but in the vast majority of games, the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H turns out to be slightly faster.

⇡#Standalone

The Lenovo gaming laptop comes with a 230W (20.0V, 11.5A) power adapter that weighs 696 grams and has a 1.58m detachable cable.

The capacity of the lithium-polymer battery in the notebook is 80 Wh (5335 mAh).

We recorded the time of several cycles of a full battery charge from 3% to 99%, and the average charge time was 2 hours 5 minutes. In addition, Lenovo Vantage has a Fast Charge fast charging mode, with which you can charge a switched off or sleeping laptop in 15 minutes for 3 hours of normal work, and in one hour the battery should be charged to 80%.

The same utility has a handy information window that displays a lot of useful information, including battery temperature and the number of charge cycles.

The battery life of the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H was tested in the PCMark’10 test suite in Modern Office, Gaming and Video test modes, with a display brightness of 200 cd/m2 (86%). The results were quite unexpected for a high performance gaming laptop.

 PCMark'10

PCMark’10 Gaming (1hr 47min)

 PCMark’10 «Video» (11 ч 00 мин)

PCMark’10 Video (11 h 00 min)

Unexpected because the battery lasted for almost 10 hours for everyday work, and for 11 hours for watching videos. This is very cool, if you take into account the powerful hardware component of the Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H. Gaming tests lasted less than two hours, but it would be more correct to call them conditional gaming, because the performance of a laptop of this class (any) in battery mode is very modest.

⇡#Conclusion

The Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H gaming laptop combines small size with the ability to deliver comfortable gaming performance at maximum quality settings in Full HD resolution. It is made in a strict design with major splashes (chameleon logo) of tactile and fingerprint-resistant materials, which makes it quite versatile: it can become both a reliable companion in transatlantic flights and a tool in gaming battles.

A weight of three kilos along with the power supply is a standard indicator for this type of laptop, and the only problem could be the noise level, but you can always hide from it with gaming headphones. In addition, quiet gaming laptops do not exist in principle. But from the atypical, we note a very high level of autonomy – if you plan to work with text or watch a video, then you do not need to carry a power adapter with you.

In Lenovo Legion 5, we see a very successful implementation of the AMD gaming platform.
