But it’s true: we didn’t have 100% “red” gaming laptops for a very long time – the last time it was at the end of 2019, when we talked about the Alpha 15 A3DDK model equipped with Ryzen 7 3750H and Radeon RX 5500M. I agree, now AMD, or rather its Ryzen mobile processors, looks very interesting and confident in the mobile PC market. The same ASUS has recently released several interesting series of such laptops, many of which deserve close attention. However, we have been waiting for truly powerful Radeon mobile graphics! And now the hour has come, and the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition combines the best AMD solutions of this year at once.

The ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition G513QY-HQ007T, which comes with 16GB of DDR4-3200 RAM and a 512GB SSD, costs $2,500. For the terabyte SSD version of the G513QY-HQ008T, retailers are asking $2,600.
The laptop has a MediaTek Wi-Fi 6 MT7921 wireless module that supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ac/ax standards, as well as Bluetooth 5.2.
The ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition comes with a large 280W external power supply. Together with all the wires, its weight is just over 900 g. The laptop supports Power Delivery technology, and therefore it can be connected to a more compact and light ZenPower Pro PD battery or an external power supply unit up to 100 W.
⇡#Appearance and Input Devices
The design of the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition is recognizable – it’s very easy to understand that we have a ROG laptop in front of us. The hero of the review can be safely called the younger brother of the recently tested ROG STRIX SCAR 17 G733, which is also a very powerful gaming laptop. Stylistically, the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition does not stand out much from its counterparts. On the cover of the device is a large illuminated logo of the “republic”. The key features of the appearance are rigor, futurism and compactness.
|
|
The display cover is made of aluminium. The lower part of the laptop case is plastic, and the area around the keyboard has a Soft-touch coating or a very similar equivalent. Again, among the design “tricks” stand out the inscriptions “ROG” on the right side of the case and removable decorative Armor Cap. If desired, the red plate can be replaced with inserts of a different color. Using the template, you can 3D print an Armor Cap of your own design – even with the inscription “Vasilich’s laptop“.
The bottom of the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition is adorned with a glowing stripe. It differs from the RGB strip used in previous generation laptops with a denser set of LEDs. Naturally, the type of glow is configured in the Aura Sync application.
ROG Strix series laptops are traditionally compact: the 15-inch Advantage Edition is 7% smaller than its predecessor. This became possible, among other things, by reducing the screen frame – the relative screen area is as much as 85%. True, the laptop lost its “webcam”, and there is no external camera for replacement in the kit – you will have to buy an analogue for your hard-earned money, if necessary, of course.
The laptop looks compact because of the special display hinges. From the side it seems that the screen is floating above the rest of the body. At the same time, the position of the lid is clearly adjustable, and its maximum opening angle is 135 degrees. And the display cover is easily lifted with one hand.
And yet, for all its compactness and apparent lightness, the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition does not break records in this category. The thickness of the device is 23-27 mm, and the weight is 2.5 kg. We add here a rather bulky power supply, and if you need to have all the power of a laptop with you, you will have to carry almost 3.5 kg of smart technology.
The laptop interfaces are placed on the back and left panels. I believe this was done on purpose, because in 99% of cases the gamer will have a mouse on the right – accordingly, nothing else should interfere. The location of the connectors on the back turns out to be very convenient if you use a laptop as a stationary PC: connect a network cable for a more reliable connection in online games, a wired mouse or printer, a monitor if necessary – and all these cables will not interfere.
On the left side of the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition are two USB 3.2 Gen1 A-type ports and a 3.5mm combo headphone jack. On the back we see RJ-45, HDMI output, another USB 3.2 Gen1 A-type and USB 3.2 Gen2 C-type. The latter port is compatible with DisplayPort 1.4 and supports the USB Power Delivery technology that I mentioned at the very beginning of the article.
Looking ahead a little, I note that the test model is perfect not only for gamers, but also for people who create content. I consider myself to be in the second category of users and on their behalf I can say that I really miss the card reader in such assemblies.
The keyboard of the 15-inch ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition does not have a numeric keypad. To be honest, I don’t presume to judge whether the manufacturer could accommodate a full-fledged block with keys with such a case size. Judging by the comments, for some users its absence is a noticeable drawback.
Pressing each button on the keyboard is processed independently of the others – you can hold down as many keys as you like at a time. ROG Overstroke technology allows you to increase such a parameter as the number of actions per minute. It operates with the concept of an earlier actuation of a key – long before it is fully pressed (somewhere in the middle of the stroke, which, according to my estimates, does not exceed 2 mm).
In general, there are no serious complaints about the keyboard layout of the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition. So, the review hero has large Shift buttons, which are often used in shooters. The WASD block is highlighted in white. Personally, I would like to have a large (“two-story”) Enter in the arsenal, but you can easily get used to such a button in a couple of days. It is also convenient to use the arrow keys – they are finally being made large in ASUS laptops. The key resource, according to the manufacturer, exceeds 20 million keystrokes.
The power button is located where it should be – away from the rest of the keys. Five more keys are moved away from the main unit: with their help, the speaker volume is adjusted, the built-in microphone is turned on and off, the Armory Crate application is called, and one of several computer operating modes is activated.
To the right of the main keys are multimedia buttons: start / stop playback, next video or track, and at the very bottom is the Print Screen button. The Home, PgUp/PgDn and End functions are adjacent to the arrows and are activated by the Fn modifier.
You can customize the backlighting of each key separately in the Aura Creator program. The keyboard has three levels of brightness. With a little fiddling, you can create multiple profiles for work, play, and other entertainment at a specific time. For example, when watching movies, the backlight will only interfere and it makes sense to turn it off completely. When working on a laptop at night, it makes sense to make the brightness lower, and higher during the day, or, conversely, turn off the backlight completely.
The touchpad of the Rogbook is large and comfortable (130 × 82 mm). A typical HID of the latest ASUS gaming laptops. It turns out to be quite convenient to use. However, for games, in any case, you will need to buy a good mouse in addition to the good keyboard already in the laptop.
⇡#Internal design and upgrade options
The laptop is very easy to disassemble: you just need to slowly and carefully disconnect the bottom from the rest of the case without damaging the backlight cables. The key phrase here is as carefully as possible.
The ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition cooling system looks unusual. This is because the central processing unit and graphics chip, as well as their power harness, are covered by a large evaporation chamber. We have already tested a laptop with a similar cooling system, and therefore we roughly understand what it is capable of. The evaporation chamber works more efficiently than copper tubes – therefore, with proper fan settings, much more heat will be removed, since heat transfer can be increased several times compared to CO based on conventional heat pipes. In addition, the use of such chambers allows you to effectively cool not only processors, but also the entire chip wiring – sparing operating conditions for power converters also have a positive effect on the device’s speed and durability. Another big plus of the evaporation chamber is less heating of the case from the keyboard side, but we will talk about this in more detail in the second part of the article.
The design of the cooler also uses heat pipes and four radiators. Each heatsink consists of copper fins only 0.1mm thick. Thanks to this, their number has been increased with an overall reduction in airflow resistance by 7% (manufacturer’s data).
The central processor with the sole of the camera interacts with the help of liquid metal. According to ASUS, the use of Thermal Grizzly helps to reduce the temperature of the chip by 14 degrees Celsius. To automate the application of liquid metal to the processor, the ROG engineering team has developed special high-precision equipment. In addition, the cooling block is designed to prevent liquid metal from leaking over time.
Each Arc Flow fan received 84 blades, the thickness of which varies from base to edge in such a way as to maximize airflow. “Carlsons” are made of liquid crystal polymer – they are durable with a thickness of the blades at the thinnest point of only 0.1 mm. ASUS research says Arc Flow is up to 17% more airflow than previous generation impellers.
As for upgrading the laptop, we can increase the amount of RAM in it by replacing the existing DDR4-3200 modules, for example, with 16-gigabyte sticks. Fortunately, the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition motherboard has two M.2 ports at once, to which four PCI Express 3.0 lanes are connected. So it’s most rational to buy another SSD over time. In the meantime, the only drive in the system is the Samsung MZVLQ1T0HBLB model.

Gaming performance was measured using the well-known CapFrameX program. It allows you to get the rendering time of each frame. The use of the 99th percentile instead of the minimum frames per second is due to the desire to clean up the results from random performance fluctuations that were provoked by reasons not directly related to the operation of the main components of the platform.
Testing the laptop in games and applications was carried out with the activation of the fastest mode suitable for these tasks.
Applications:
- Corona 1.3. Testing rendering speed using the renderer of the same name. Measures the build speed of the standard BTR scene used to measure performance.
- Blender 2.92. Determination of the final rendering speed in one of the popular free packages for creating three-dimensional graphics. The duration of building the final model pavillon_barcelona_v1.2 from Blender Benchmark is measured.

- Unigine Superposition Benchmark. 1080p Extreme testing.
Notebook testing in resource-intensive applications was carried out in the default mode without any adjustment of the parameters of the central processor and cooler. Display testing is performed using the X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter and the DisplayCAL 3 application. The battery life of the laptop was tested in two modes. The first load option – web surfing – involves alternately opening and closing the tabs of the Computeruniverse.ru and Unsplash.com sites with an interval of 30 seconds. For this test, the current version of the Google Chrome browser at the time of testing is used. In the second mode, video in .mkv format and Full HD resolution is played in the built-in player of Windows OS with the repeat function activated. In all cases, the same display brightness was set to 200 cd / m2, and the keyboard backlight (if any) and the sound were turned off.
In games and other applications, the results of the following laptops are considered:
Test participants | Model | Screen | Processor | RAM | Graphics | Drive | Battery | ASUS ROG Zephyrus S17 GX703 | 17.3″, 3840 × 2160 | Intel Core i9-11900H, 8/16 cores/threads, 2.5 (4.9) GHz, 45W | 32 GB DDR4-3200 Dual Channel | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Notebook 16GB GDDR6 | 3TB SSD | 90 Wh | ASUS ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition G513QY | 15.6″, 1920 × 1080 | AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX 8/16 Cores/Threads 3.3 (4.6) GHz 45W | 16 GB DDR4-3200 Dual Channel | AMD Radeon RX 6800M 12GB GDDR6 | SSD, 1TB | 90 Wh |
⇡#Display and sound
The ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition comes with two types of IPS displays, both of which support Free Sync technology. There are screens with Full HD resolution at 300 Hz and WQHD at 165 Hz to choose from. In both cases, we are talking about high-quality matrices that are suitable not only for gamers.
The ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition we tested has a 300Hz TL156VDXP01 sensor, something we haven’t seen before. I have no complaints about the image quality of the laptop. Here is a mobile computer with a high-quality screen, suitable for both entertainment and work.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus S17 GX703 (Matrix – TL156VDXP01) | Minimum brightness | 16 cd/m2 | Maximum brightness | 340 cd/m2 | Color temperature | 7000K | Contrast | 1195:1 | sRGB gamut | 100% | Adobe RGB color gamut | 69% | Grey scale deviation: average (maximum) | 1.01 (1.56) | Extended test deviation: mean (maximum) | 1.12 (3.57) | Viewing angles | as stated | Glow effect | present | PWM | not seen at all brightness levels |

|
|
The ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition also has an excellent sound: there is volume, there is bass, there is density, there is volume – I like it, in general. Naturally, in this matter, we must make allowances for the fact that we are dealing with a laptop, and not a separate desktop speaker system.
⇡#Efficiency of the cooling system
With the help of the Armory Crate program and the function button on the keyboard, we can select different modes of operation. When running on battery, the default mode is “Quiet”, when working from the mains – “Turbo”. There is also an intermediate mode called “Balanced”. I tested the laptop in the last two, and entered the results in a table.
Summary of laptop operation and setup | Laptop mode | Turbo | Balanced | Declared GPU Speed (Boost) and Memory Speed | 2390 MHz, 16 Gbps | 2390 MHz, 16 Gbps | Cyberpunk 2077 Real GPU Clock: Min, Max, Average | 2290 MHz | 2214 MHz | 2543 MHz | 2521 MHz | 2354 MHz | 2238 MHz | Max noise level | 45.5 dBA | 42.6 dBA | Average Power: GPU, CPU | 142W | 126W | 29 W | 24W | GPU Temperature: Average, Maximum | 83 °C | 84 °C | 84 °C | 84 °C | CPU temperature: average, maximum | 96 °C | 94 °C | 97 °C | 95 °C | Performance | 3DMark Time Spy, points | 11609 | 11009 | 3DMark Fire Strike scores | 27949 | 26665 | Unigine Superposition, 1080p Extreme, points | 6717 | 6390 |
|
|
Traditionally, in the “Turbo” mode, the laptop is faster: in benchmarks, the difference with the “Balanced” mode reaches 5%. The benefit is small, but it comes at the cost of increased noise levels to keep key system components running at peak power. Yes, the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition has a very hot CPU, but these are the features of the evaporation chamber common to the two crystals and their strapping. Nevertheless, CO effectively removes heat from the GPU, memory chips and power converters of both chips – this must also be taken into account. The work is not easy, because only the GPU consumes over 140 watts of electricity.
In “Balanced” mode, temperatures and power consumption are slightly lower. In such conditions, the laptop is no longer too loud, the device can be used without headphones. I won’t call the quiet ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition either, although everything is individual here.
And look, the use of the evaporation chamber really makes it so that the laptop keyboard does not heat up much. Using the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition in games is very comfortable.
Perhaps someone will be surprised by the frequency potential of the Radeon RX 6800M processor, but we are dealing with RDNA 2 generation graphics. Therefore, the operation of even a mobile chip at a frequency of 2000+ MHz is a common occurrence.
In resource-intensive applications, the work of the central processor is tuned to squeeze the maximum performance out of it. This increases heat and noise. But the Ryzen 9 5900HX in Turbo mode works with a power of 84 W, and this is a stable 4.1 GHz in Blender class programs. Unsurprisingly, the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition performs well in our testing (more on that below).
Laptop cooling efficiency in Blender 2.92 | Turbo | Balanced | CPU frequency, GHz | Medium | 4,1 | 4,0 | CPU temperature, °C | Maximum | 96 | 93 | Medium | 95 | 90 | Noise level, dBA | Maximum | 45,8 | 41.1 | CPU power consumption, W | Average | 84 | 73 | Time to execute test task victor (less is better) | 13 min 50 s | 14 min 10 s |

⇡#Laptop performance
The most interesting “ingredient” in the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition, of course, is the Radeon RX 6800M. It is important to understand that the mobile version of this graphics is based on the Navi 22 XT processor – exactly the same chip is used in the Radeon RX 6700 XT discrete graphics card. As a matter of fact, it is: the Radeon RX 6800M is a trimmed version of the Radeon RX 6700 XT to reduce power consumption. It uses a 192-bit bus and 12 GB of memory with a bandwidth of 16,000 Mbps per pin.
Note that the laptop version of the GeForce RTX 3080 uses the same GPU as the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti discrete graphics card. Only NVIDIA allows laptop manufacturers to change the power consumption of GPUs, and therefore the performance of Ampere mobile graphics can vary greatly from model to model. In the graphs above, the review hero is compared with the ROG Zephyrus S17 model – in it, the power consumption of the flagship NVIDIA chip reaches 140 W in Dynamic Boost mode. As a result, laptops show different results: the “red” model is faster in 3DMARK Time Spy and Fire Strike by 5 and 23%, if we take only the Graphics Score. And in Unigine Superposition, as in the least processor-dependent benchmark, ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition is already slower – by 11%.
I suppose we will see something similar in games, besides, in Full HD resolution, FPS is also affected by processor dependence (and it is lower for RDNA 2 chips). But overall, the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition is great for today’s games.
Test results in games, FPS (more is better) | Full HD | AVG | 1% MIN | World of Tanks | 233 | 149 | CS:GO | 288 | 94 | PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds | 139 | 96 | The Witcher III: Wild Hunt | 109 | 85 | GTA V | 78 | 52 | Shadow of the Tomb Raider | 119 | 98 | Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | 77 | 52 | Red Dead Redemption 2 | 116 | 80 | Gears 5 | 110 | 83 | Metro: Exodus | 80 | 45 | Death Stranding | 147 | 120 | A Total War Saga: TROY | 89 | 59 | Horizon Zero Dawn | 100 | 72 | Watch Dogs: Legion | 72 | 56 | Battlefield V | 130 | 88 | Cyberpunk 2077 | 63 | 44 | DOOM Eternal | 216 | 111 |
As I said, the hero of the review is not only a productive gaming system, but will also serve well for those who need a powerful mobile workstation. The evidence of my words is presented in the graphs below.
ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition also demonstrates excellent results in the comprehensive PCMARK 10 benchmark. The Digital Content Creation subtest focuses on multi-threaded resource-intensive workloads: photo and video editing, as well as 3D rendering and visualization – and here the superiority of the Ryzen 9 5900HX makes itself felt. And in such a scenario as Essentials (the speed of launching applications, browser and web conferences), the hero of the review is also ahead.
⇡#Laptop offline
The ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition comes with a 90 Wh battery. The manufacturer indicates that the laptop can work up to 12 hours in video playback mode – I managed to “squeeze” almost 11 hours out of the test model at a fairly high screen brightness. So personally I willingly believe the statements of ASUS.
In general, the autonomy of the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition is at a very high level – especially if we consider the category of gaming computers. It turns out that this laptop for everyday use can be taken with you without a massive external power supply, if you need a system on the road to perform undemanding tasks (watching videos, surfing the web). Again, the device supports Power Delivery technology, and therefore you can get a powerbank or a compact external PSU. From 0 to 50% the battery is charged in just half an hour.

⇡#Conclusions
It’s great to see that AMD has returned not only to the mobile CPU race, but also to the laptop gaming graphics market. The mobile Radeon RX 6800M is really competitive – at least that’s true for games that don’t use hardware ray tracing. As a result, the tested ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition appears as an excellent solution for both games and resource-intensive tasks.
The laptop noticeably heats up and makes noise in processor-dependent applications, but does not overheat. This feature also has a downside, because we have a rather powerful assembly that demonstrates excellent performance in various tasks – and not only gaming ones.
The rest of the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition is very cool: assembly, quality of materials, upgrade options, design; the screen and sound in the laptop are excellent; ASUS keyboards are also generally good for me; a set of ports is sufficient for a gaming system, and autonomy is at the level of “beyond praise.”
